I know it has been a long time since I have posted, but not really much goes on in our lives here in west Texas. We just go to work and school. Wed did finally get some rain recently, so that was nice. Oh, and Kelli got a new washer and dryer. She has been real nice to me since. Had I known the effect it would have, I would have bought them sooner. I hope everyone stays healthy through the swine flu outbreak. Just remember, in 1976, the same thing happened, and the cure was worse than the disease. So maybe we shouldn't panic just yet.

Stem Cell Advances

I mentioned in my last post about Bill Clinton's ignorance concerning embryonic stem cells, and it seems that most people probably suffer to some extent the same concerning scientific matters. I found an article on The Weekly Standard detailing a relatively new technology in stem cell research. Without getting too technical, the new technology, "induced pluripotent stem cells", "produces the biological equivalent of embryonic stem cells without creating, using or destroying any human embryos." One very important potential advantage coming to light with this technology is that it is patient specific. In other words, immune rejection is not a problem. Embryonic stem cell technology can only make this claim through cloning. Below is the link for the article. I encourage you to read it.

Wintry weather hits

I was feeling pretty lucky yesterday. It was beautiful here yesterday, while the rest of the country seemed to be locked in winter weather. Today, however, is a different story. It is 32 degrees and drizzling.

Kyler has been running track the last few weeks. He came home Monday, and told me they ran quarter miles for time. He ran an 85 second quarter, which was quite an improvement for him. He said of the experience, "you know that feeling your stomach makes right before you throw up. That's what mine did." Welcome to track and field. Wish him well.

I don't know if you heard this yesterday, but the president told a group of business execs that "things....not as bad as we think they are now." I guess charging 787 billion to our credit card is already starting to help.

Recently, in an interview with Dr. Sanjay Gupta, former president Bill Clinton talked about the issue of embryonic stem cell research. BILL CLINTON: I think -- the answer is I think that we’ll work it through. When it’s -- if it -- particularly, if it’s done right. If it’s obvious that we’re not taking embryos that can -- that under any conceivable scenario would be used for a process that would allow them to be fertilized and become little babies, and I think if it’s obvious that we’re not talking about some science fiction cloning of human beings, then I think the American people will support this. I agree with the president. As long as these embryos will never be fertilized, they should be able to use as many as they want. God help us.

We just got back from Nocona, after a trip to a funeral of a good friend of mine. If you knew Kevin Bailey, you knew he was a stand up guy. He was the kind of kid that your parents didn't worry about you hanging out with him. His passing sure makes you realize not to take for granted those you care about.

If you didn't hear, the past few years, global temperatures have held steady, in the face of continued increases in CO2 production. Apparently, the earth is giving us a chance to get things right, before it unleashes its fury on us. Please buy the expensive light bulbs and check your air pressure in your tires before it is too late.

Some time in the coming weeks, President Obama's tax cuts should start appearing in people's paychecks. At an average of $13/week, we should certainly some rapid improvement in the economy. I think you can buy a 12 pack of beer for 12.99. Just a suggestion.

Wintry Weather hits

Did anyone see this on the news. I woke up this morning hearing about this plane crash this morning. It was a Fedex jet that slid off the runway and burned, here in Lubbock. I didn't realize how bad it was til this afternoon, when I read the paper. Everyone walked away, but, it doesn't look like any freight survived. It has been a very busy week for the LFD. Last shift we worked a head on collision about 2 miles from my station. A 20 y/o female drifted across the center line and struck an oncoming car. She was killed instantly and the other driver was pretty torn up. It can be very sobering, thinking about how quickly tragedy can strike. I'm sure neither one intended to not go home that night. The worst part about a job in public safety or medicine is that you see all the ways there are to die. Then you spend your time worrying about your family. So pay attention out there!
On a lighter note, Jack Frost struck here in west Texas. It is about 20F, with ice everywhere. I think I will just stay in all day.

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - Wildlife officials said a rhesus monkey known to throw feces when mad is on the loose in Tampa Bay. Authorities have been trying to capture the primate since Tuesday afternoon, but it managed to evade a bucket truck and tranquilizer dart.

Gary Morse with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says the adult male is thought to have escaped from an unlicensed source. It was last seen in Clearwater.

The monkey is not considered dangerous.

Sight seeing

We decided to go on a road trip. We went to the head waters of the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River. It lies about 1 1/2 hours north of Lubbock. As you drive across the plains, all you see is grass and sky. Then all of a sudden, you drop off into a canyon. These pictures don't do it justice. It is really pretty neat. This is where the Red river starts. You could pee in the river here, and in just a few days, it would pass Grandpa's house. At least that is what the sign says. We also ran into this little alien. He let us take his picture.

Great news. Our dog is pregnant, so its puppies for everyone. If you will let me know your sex wishes, (I mean boy or girl,) We'll get you fixed up.

This all started several weeks ago. Our fence was down while I was pouring some sidewalks in the backyard, and of course, our female Shepard goes into heat. Last week I looked at her and thought "man, you're getting fat." (I was talking to the dog.)
My next thought was, "surely you're not pregnant." The last time I said those words, I was way off.

Well, looks like I was wrong again. I can see her getting bigger by the day. (I'm still talking about the dog.)

This ought to be fun.

Kyler learns to read

Well, not much to report from the South Plains. This year, Kyler is in GT reading class, and last month, he had a hard time in it. His 6 weeks grade was an 84. After much encouragement (and positive reinforcement) from his mother and I, he is up to a 95, and all A's. I remember before he was born, we were warned he could have learning difficulties, (which was partially true. He still hasn't learned to clean his room, flush the toilet, brush his teeth etc.) however, anyone that has talked with him quickly realizes he is quite intelligent. I figure he will be an inventor. He spends alot of time dreaming up machines that will do his work for him. Necessity is the mother of invention.

I guess winter is finally here. We have had sub freezing temps the last two nights, down in the 20's. We are getting geared up for the final Christmas push. There are so many things out there to buy, I hope we can find time to buy them all.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the river. Take care until then.

Big Big 12 weekend

It is a big weekend for the Big 12. OU and OSU are playing. If OSU can win, Tech will win the Big 12 south, so please root accordingly.

We went to watch Zach play in Sweetwater, in the regional semifinals last night. Bridgeport was down 28-7 in the 3rd quarter, and they came back and won in overtime. It was a really good game.

I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. We did, and we have a lot to be thankful for. Most especially our family. We miss everyone who is abroad, (which is pretty much everyone.) We look forward to seeing some of you all at Christmas. So, take care until then.

Well, I know you all heard, the Raiders got scalped in Indian territory. Oklahoma dismantled us again in Norman. I would normally resort to blaming it on the refs, but, I don't think anyone would buy it. Hopefully one of our Big 12 teams can play for the national championship, but I really have to root for my boys in orange in Stillwater next week, they are taking on the Sooners. Sorry Anna and Charlie.

Now, I am not sure what makes you a sanitation expert, (my dad has a lot of experience in this field, but I am not sure if he has weighed in on this issue yet), but apparently all the flushing we do is detrimental to our society. I urge to read the following, an excerpt from Al Gore's enviromental website. Here he warns us that we may be headed toward extinction as a people, if we don't get our act together. (Together with a long line of unfortunates, like the Mayans, the DoDo bird and the buffalo.) I got to thinking, since this is partially a carbon emission problem, why couldn't every one start skipping every other breath, we could reduce our carbon emissions by 50% overnight. I ask no recognition or applause for my suggestion, I am just trying to do my part.

Big Football Weekend

Well, if you missed it, both our teams won this weekend. Bridgeport Bulls decimated Decatur, 56-7, and qualified for the playoffs. And Tech rolled up the Okie Cowboys 56-20, on national televison. This year, the Big 12 conference has a great chance to send a team to the national championship. Tech is #2, Texas is #3, and Oklahoma is #5. We have got to play OU in 2 weeks, up in Norman, so make sure and watch it, it will be a good game.

Good luck to Zach and the Bulls, they will start their playoff run in 2 weeks, and they have a good chance to make it to state.

BIG GAME THIS SATURDAY

If you aren't doing anything Saturday night, Oklahoma State is coming to Lubbock to play the Raiders. Just like last week, this will probably be a heck of a game. So if you don't even like football, this will be fun to watch. Tech is #2 in the nation, and has a chance to play for a national championship should they win their next 3 games. This football success has been fantastic for the city of Lubbock.
Also, my nephew Zach is playing in a big game tomorrow night. His team, Bridgeport HS, is playing their biggest rival, Decatur. Bridgeport is #1 in the state in 3A, and Zach is a starting defensive lineman. I got to watch them a couple of weeks ago, and they look like a college team. So, good luck Zach.
I don't want to turn this into a political blog, but I will encourage you to get involved in local politics. Whether you are liberal or conservative, you live in a democracy, and your views count. This latest election showed us how uniformed we are, from both sides, and how we continue to take a uninterested stance toward who we cede political power to. There could come point at which we can't get that power back. Ask those in Cuba or Venezuela. Anyway, have a good weekend.

Well, if you didn't stay up late to watch the Tech game, you missed it. Even if you are not a football fan, this was one of the greatest games ever played. Tech got out to an early lead, but let it go in the 2nd half. Texas scored and took the lead with only 2 minutes left in the game. Tech drove the ball and scored with 1 second left on the clock to beat the #1 team in the country. It was truly one of those games where you didn't get up to go to the bathroom! Well, we are excited here in Lubbock for the Raiders. We've got to play the Pokes from Okie state next week, so be sure to watch it. It will be another nail biter.

Raiders v Longhorns

Well, tomorrow is the big day for college football. The Horns are #1 in the nation, and the Raiders are #6. They play tomorrow at 7, so be sure to watch and root for the Raiders. This game could have national championship implications, so we are really excited.

Not much going on here is west Texas. I finally got around to pouring some sidewalks around my house, and in the backyard. For the last few weeks, I have had part of the fence down, so I could get the tractor in the backyard. So, my dogs were always loose. Well, perfect timing, my female went into heat, and you could never keep her home. (she has loose morals.) Then Baron got in a fight over her with another dog, and he got the bad end of the deal. I had to take him to the vet today, to get his face sewed up. I think he'll take up celibacy after this.

Make sure you go vote, if you haven't already. We are at a crossroads in this great country. I hope sincerely that our country isn't about to make a terrible mistake come Tuesday.
Kruschev once predicted that Americans would, over time, take small bites of Communism, (hidden under the cloak of the Democratic party,) until one day we will wake up as Communists ourselves. He may have been right.

But, keep your chin up. We all ought to be getting our "Bailout" any day now. Right?

Well, I went fishing yesterday at a lake by Munday, TX. If you don't know where that is, it is in the middle of nowhere. It was a nice lake, but it managed to rain starting in the evening and all night long. These two yahoos are a couple of firemen that I work with. They caught this 15 pound yellow on a throw line. I left early this morning, and didn't get to run the lines, so I don't know if they caught any more. I suspect they did.

We have gotten several inches of rain yesterday and today in Lubbock.

Death of Democracy

Well here is my gripe. 700 Billion Dollars. Have you sat down and figured out how much of that is your share? It is probably more than you are willing to fork over (voluntarily) to support greed and irresponsibility. 700 Billion dollars. Centralization of a large portion of the American economy within the federal government. Right out of Karl Marx's playbook. Are you willing to give up your freedom, in order that those that were greedy and those that borrowed irresponsibly can be forgiven? If failure to pass this massive wealth transfer results in a recession, or worse, a depression, wouldn't that be better than sacrificing freedom that your children and grandchildren could enjoy? From 1776 to World War II, men sacrificed their LIVES, to ensure we enjoyed a freedom unknown to any other nation or empire in the history of the world. Now, from the President, (who I have ardently supported for 8 years), to the congress, there doesn't seem to be one man or woman willing to sacrifice their good name or legacy on preserving that very freedom. Not their physical life, just their legacy. Noone wants to take the blame should the worst case scenario happen. You can bet; however, that merely throwing 700 Billion Dollars at the problem, without correcting that which caused the problem, will only postpone the pain. Just my opinion.

Big 12 supremacy

Well, most of you don't really care, but the college football top 25 came out today, and the Big 12 conference had 4 teams in the top ten. Oklahoma is number 1 in the nation, along with Texas, Missouri and Texas Tech. The downside to this is Tech still has to play the Okies and the Horns. We have to play OU in Norman, so you can kinda guess how that is going to go. We have beat them 2 of the last three years though. Anyway, that is all I have. Take care.

We just got back from the river, this weekend. Kyler and I went fishing, but it just wasn't meant to be. We caught a 6 inch channel cat, and that is about it. We got to spend sometime with Steve and his kids, and Nita, Anyla, and Zach. So all in all, it was a good trip.

Kyler wants everyone to know he got the lead part in One Act Play. He was real excited. I didn't know he was such a good actor. Well we are proud of him.

This last picture is some hogs on the river. You can't really seem them, but they are there.

Grandma breaks ribs and Tech wins. (merely conicidence)

Well, before we could Grandma on a plane to Missouri, she fell and broke her ribs. So she is layed up here in Lubbock, until she can recover. She is doing ok. Just a lot of pain. Say a prayer for her, and Kelli, as she is trying to take care of her and work too.

Kelli is a very patient person, but a person can only listen to the same stories and graphic health disorders so many times, before it becomes unbearable.

On the upshot, the Raiders won this weekend. Kyler and I went to the game, and had a good time. We are ranked in the top 10 in the nation, but we have to face the Okies later this year, so that may be tough.

Well, Grandma Payne is still here, if you were wondering. Since I haven't been doing anything on my days off, I get to stay home with her. You 'd be suprised how much you can learn about someone just by listening to their stories. You'd really be suprised. Not much is really happening here in West Texas, as usual. It is finally started cooling off. A much needed respite from the 100 degree days. Kyler is getting adjusted to school, and Kelli is doing well. Her ankle seems to be fully healed.

I finally got a contract on my house, (the one I built to sell) so that is a load off my mind. It will be nice to not have to go mow the lawn every week, and clean the windows and such.

Oh here is a picture of Kyer, just out of the shower. I took it so we would have a memory of him after he melted. (from the shower) Amazingly enough, he didn't. I don't know where he got such an idea.

Well, last night we got some more rain, which we really needed. When I bought this 2 acres, I never thought about having to mow 2 acres of weeds. Well, that takes alot of time. I guess I'll get me some goats. I finally got Kyler lined out on how to weed eat, so that helps a little. He is not near as picky about his lawn care as I am.

Well, Grandma Payne made it safely to Texas. She is staying with us for a couple of weeks. Practice for this winter, I guess.

Kyler started school this week, and I guess he likes it, he hasn't really complained yet. He has some advanced courses, so maybe we'll see how smart he really is.

We went and saw Jane and Ralph yesterday, and had a wonderful time. I got to browse hundreds of old pictures, and hear some stories about the Paschall family that I had never heard before. Here are some photos of the house I built. My plans for getting rich are quickly going down the toilet. I got into the home building business just in time for the housing crash. So now I have a winter home and a summer home. 2 miles apart. If anyone needs a place to stay, let me know.

Fishing trip

These are a little late, but here are some photos from our annual fishing trip to Durango. The weather was really nice in July, just a little rain and lots of sun. We caught our limit every day, and we brought home 48 fish. I also included a picture of Grandma's house. It sure looks little. That fish Drew is holding is one we bought at the store. It is plastic, but it sure looks real.

I came to work tonite, at 5 pm, and at 7 pm we caught another house fire. This one was about a mile from the station. Luckily no one was home, but it sustained quite abit of damage. Here are some photos.

Well, I spent this morning watching Ky play golf. We enrolled him in a golf clinic, at the Tech golf course. He seems to really be improving. We go and play every once in a while. I don't seem to be improving, however. I could play just as well with a sack of broken tree limbs. There is really nothing like hitting a ball off into the weeds, walking 10 feet, finding it, and hitting it again. 256 times. But its fun.

Since I have such a great time reading Lisa's and Anna Lea's blogs, I thought I would start one as well. Now you can check in here and see what is going on with the Paschall's in Lubbock. I recently made a promotion to captain, so I changed jobs. Instead of fighting fires and being a hero, I am a chauffer of sorts. driving a chief around and doing his bidding. But, it pays good, so I don't complain. Plus I don't have to get out of the suburban on the fire scene, and the air conditioner works good. There are some drawbacks, though. Let me layout for you how our department works. We work 24 hours on, and 48 hours off. The city is divided into 2 batallions, each of which is commanded by a batallion chief. (1 step above me.) When he goes on vacation, I move up to take his place. The first night I moved up, we had a house fire in our territory. The first reports from dispatch told us that there were possibly children trapped. What a way to start out! Luckily, there was no one home, but the house sustained considerable damage. ( Not due to my command capabilities.) Well, it was good to get that one out of the way. Maybe the next one won't be so nerve wracking. Other than that, my job is pretty mundane. I pretty much take care of the vacation schedule, and making sure the chief is to his appointments on time. I am a very important member of society. Anyway. That is all I have to say.
